Karl Gottlob Schelle: Die Spatziergänge oder die Kunst spatzierenzugehenThe concept of the flaneur enjoyed great popularity in the early 19th century among many writers and scholars in Western Europe. This period saw the development of the idea that authors could not gain any insight into the world around them by staying indoors. Under the motto “Spaces define those who move through them”, Karl Gottlob Schelle proposed the theory of walking. This combined “bodily activity and sensual impressions with mental activity.” Thus in walking a wholeness is achieved which Schelle defines with the words, “Man is only wholly man when he goes for a walk.” | |
