The two volumes brought together in this edition contain an important collection of stereotypical proverbs and expressions about different ethnic groups, peoples and nationalities. They range from affectionate local teasing to dangerous stereotypical prejudices which illustrate the danger of proverbs when they become a generally-accepted characterisation of a whole group of people. In this work Otto von Reinsburg-Düringfeld (1822-1876) has brought together an interesting international collection for the psychological study of proverbs, which is currently attracting new attention in research on “national characteristics”.
