Franck, Sebastian: Sprichwörter, schöne, weise, herrliche Clugreden und HoffsprüchThis 750-page collection, containing some 7,000 German proverbs and proverbial expressions, is the only German “mass collection” of the 16th century, far outstripping the collections by Johann Agricola (1492-1566), and Christian Egenolff (1502-1555). Sebastian Franck (1499-1542) compiles his collection from the widest possible range of other contemporary ones. Many texts have explanatory notes which are themselves of great interest to cultural historians. A treasure trove for the comparative and historical study of proverbs, which has hitherto been scarcely available to researchers, although until the 17th century it was considered the most important collection. | |
