Frisch, Johann Leonhard: Teutsch-lateinisches Wörter-BuchThe Berlin Schoolmaster Johann Leonhard Frisch completed his linguistic life’s work in 1741. It was recognised by discerning contemporaries and, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, adopted as a standard work in the philology of ancient, dialect and specialist vocabulary. When Jacob Grimm mentions his forerunner in the preface to the Deutsches Wörterbuch, he calls Frisch’s work “the first learned German dictionary”. | |
