Kircher, Athanasius: Musurgia universalis

In his Musurgia universalis, the Jesuit and universal scholar Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680) sets himself the impressive task of bringing together the complete musical knowledge of his age. As a theory of harmony in the most comprehensive sense, his great study is more than a mere compendium of Baroque musical ideas. Kircher devotes extensive excurses to such varied topics as the physical origin of sounds, the study of instruments, the theory of composition or the effect of music on human emotions. Kircher’s conception of music has an applied mathematical science is rooted in his theologically-based stance that God is the origin of all that exists and acknowledged as the omnipotent architect of the world.
An updated index in this reprint offers direct access to Kircher’s intellectual universe. Both volumes are augmented with examples of music by the most important contemporary composers.
