But it is not by chance that many bibliographies accidentally turn the German Hausbuch (‘Household book’) into a Handbuch (‘Reference Book’), for the scope and variety collection of over 4000 proverbs and sayings in this volume, and its alphabetical arrangement by keywords, give it the feel of a formal reference work. Wolfgang Mieder, Professor of German Studies and Folklore, at the University of Vermont makes it clear in his preface that there need not be any difference between academic requirements and domestic educational purposes.
