Klein, Karl Kurt: Literaturgeschichte des Deutschtums im Ausland

While linguistic research, especially dialect studies, has never forgotten the matter of the German language abroad, even after the events of the Second World War, literary studies seem to have neglected the whole area of German minority literature from all over the world. Only in recent years, especially under the influence of German-language studies from abroad of German literature, has there been an increased willingness among researchers to take renewed notice of foreign German-language literature and some initial attempts to bring it into the study of literary and cultural history.
In this phase of the rediscovery of foreign German literature as reading matter and research topic, there is a definite need to draw attention to the achievements of the Innsbruck Professor of Old German Language and Literature Karl Kurt Klein in the field of literary research, and especially to his most important work, the Literaturgeschichte des Deutschtums in Deutschland (1939).
Karl Kurt Klein (Weißkirch/Transylvania 1897-1971 Innsbruck) devoted his academic career to the history of the Goths, the settlement and linguistic history of the Transylvanian Germans, and mediaeval language and literature in the Tyrol. Klein’s study Die deutsche Dichtung Siebenbürgens im Ausgang des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts (1925) laid the foundations for his history of foreign German literature in which he presents a literary and cultural description, based on quantities of original material, of the origins and development of German linguistic communities and literature abroad from the middle ages to the end of the 1930s. This book can be judged without reservation as one of the greatest accounts of literary history in the history of German studies.
Karl Kurt Klein’s Literaturgeschichte des Deutschtums in Deutschland is the only complete literary history of German language and literature outside Germany. It is an indispensable reference work for the general reader and a useful handbook for both literary and cultural historians. Although the work was published in 1939 it still has a strong claim to be the only academically reliable description.
The new edition of Karl Kurt Klein’s Literaturgeschichte des Deutschtums in Deutschland – augmented with the first bibliography (ca. 800 entries) of the cultural scene among German-speaking communities abroad (1945-1978) – is intended to focus general public interest more strongly on the German language and German literature abroad, and to inspire scholars to widen their studies to cover this area.
