Description

Bernstein, Ignaz: Catalogue des livres parémiologiques composant la bibliothèque de Ignace Bernstein

With more than 6000 titles, the catalogue of the special collection of the Polish paremiologist Ignace Bernstein (1836-1909) practically represents a bibliography of international proverb literature. The main part of the bibliophil catalogue from the year 1900 lists 4,761 titles in alphabetical sequence. Several hundred facsimiles are printed in the text. This catalogue originally published only in a limited edition is now being made available again.
Altogether the two volumes offer 242 illustrations, among them 13 plates. Most of them are in original size. Almost all illustrations concern works from the early centuries of book printing: a small number of incunabula, over 100 books of the 16th century and more than 70 from the I1h century.
Of the 4,761 titles no fewer than 1.100 books contain German proverbs. Altogether more than 100 languages are represented.
The introduction contains a biography and bibliography of Ignace Bernstein, history of Bernstein 's proverb library; a history of the printed catalogue, acquisitions between 1900 and Bernstein 's death, and a description of the collection.
